About us

T-rank is a leading provider of ownership analytics.

What we do

T-rank primarily answers two fundamental questions:

  • Who owns who?
  • Who controls who?

It is possible to build complex ownership structures wich makes it hard to determine who are behind the companies. T-rank reveals the true owners when the traditional methods fail. This is extremely important within AML, KYC, Sanctions, tax, AFC etc.

T-rank is used by the world’s largest banks, tax authorities, intelligence agencies, law firms and many others.

Visualization

T-rank also visualizes ownership structures. By means of the answers to the two questions “who owns who” and “who controls who”, we are quickly able to identify the most relevant entities to include in the visualization. This is essential when there are tens of thousands of nodes in the ownership structures.

This screenshot from the T-rank Shareholder Map tool shows an anonymized real-life example of circular ownership.

Our history

T-rank is based in Oslo Norway.

T-rank was established in 2006, as a spin-off from Telenor Research & Innovation, with the aim of exploiting network analysis.

When T-rank started to look at ownership networks back in 2010, we first developed a solution for Norwegian banks that identified beneficial owners of their customers. At that time, a beneficial owner was defined as someone who directly or indirectly owns more than 25% in a customer. The solution had to cope with any complexity in the ownership structures, including cross- and circular ownership. The problem was solved by creating an algorithm that had a complete ownership graph as input and calculated the integrated ownership any entity has in other entities.

By the end of 2011, most Norwegian banks subscribed to this Beneficial owner service from T-rank. This service automated the job of keeping the list of Beneficial owners for legal entity customers up to date. As far as we now, Norway was the first country in the world where this degree of automation in this field was reached.

In addition to the Beneficial owner service, T-rank also developed Shareholder maps, a web application enabling our customers to look up an entity and see the owners or owned entities of this entity in an intuitive graphical representation.

In 2014, T-rank started to work with Bureau van Dijk, later to become part of Moody’s. BvD had, and still has, the most complete shareholder data in the world. The combination of the BvD shareholder data and T-rank’s algorithms were to become a huge success.

In 2015, the T-rank module, an add-on service to BvD’s business catalogue Orbis, were launched. For the first time in history, integrated ownership any entity has in any other entity was available on an global ownership graph.

When analyzing the ownership of an entity, there are primarily two relevant questions: 1) Who benefits / has the cash rights to the values in / generated by the entity and 2) who controls / has influence in the entity ?

By now, T-rank had a generic solution to the first question, but the second and harder question still needed to be solved. Traditional majority control is easy to determine, but who has how much influence when there is no majority owner is a difficult question to answer. In 2016, T-rank sat out on the journey to solve also this question.

In 2019, the Shareholder power product was launched. Since its launch, the power product has been widely adopted around the world. Amongst others, the power score is used for identifying beneficial owners and corporate groups.

Each week, T-rank calculates ownership and power for a 12-digit number of connected entity pairs. Among our clients, we find 80% of the world’s largest banks, tax authorities in many of the world’s leading economies, law enforcement bodies, FIUs, a huge number of international law firms and auditing companies, multinational companies and universities.

T-rank is a fast growing and profitable company, classified as a Gazelle company by the leading Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Næringsliv every year since 2018.
